Mr.Arulanandam Pillai was a significant figure in Athangudi village, living there a century ago. Known as the Chief Mason of Construction and Cement Tiles with Slab and Jolly Makers, his craftsmanship laid the foundation for a lasting legacy. His son, Mr. A. Amritswamy Pillai, innovated the famed “Athangudi tiles” about 80 years back when India was under British rule. The introduction of the fully glazed flower tile work met with challenges early on, but Amritswamy Pillai’s dedication soon attracted a diverse clientele, capturing the admiration of local residents, British officials, and landlords alike. Renowned for his exceptional quality and punctual delivery, Mr. Pillai earned the loyalty of customers, who still cherish the craftsmanship of Athangudi Tiles to this day. Following his passing, his son, the late Mr. Selva, took up the mantle to continue the family tradition of excellence in til renovation.

Mr. Alex, along with his brother Mr. Arun, is carrying on the legacy of their esteemed grandfather, Mr. Pillai, by managing the renowned Selva Industries, known for its pioneering work in Athangudi Tiles. In addition to his role at Selva Industries, Mr. Alex serves as the Secretary of The Federation of Chettinad Athangudi Floor Tiles Association. He is dedicated to not only championing Athangudi Tiles but also promoting the rich array of handicrafts that the Chettinad region has to offer.

Selva Industries has become a name closely associated with Athangudi Tiles, celebrated for their commitment to preserving the cultural heritage of these unique tiles.
